Media theory

A research post about one media theory that you wish to integrate into your project

Hey there Cambridge, 😊 let's talk media theory, shall we?  Our movie opening is a psychological drama/ romance, our plot is focused on a toxic relationship seen through our protagonist's relationship with an abusive partner, we want the opening to set the tone for the rest of the piece that would touch on important taboo topics in serious need of a larger discussion. To do this, open up that conversation, we believe we should incorporate the projection theory.

The projection theory is the idea that when viewing a story of complex emotions and psychological conflicts, which our story will be, that the audience projects their own unconscious fears and experiences onto the characters allowing them to relate and process their own internal struggles through the characters on screen. The hope is that they would feel empowered and not alone, opening a bigger conversation on topics that aren't usually talked about which is a problem as it makes victims of these terrible things feel alone.

The theory relies and promotes active audience engagement, as they need to interpret the story based on their personal experiences to empower them to speak their truth to loosen the taboo, and start that conversation on abuse in romantic relationships. In addition, the story should worm under the audiences skin so, when they project their own unconscious feelings into the characters allowing them to relate to the experiences,  they feel uncomfortable with the type of relationship they're watching and hopefully prevent them from getting into a relationship like that and give the knowledge of warning signs to look out for with someone you are dating

The idea is that Different viewers will have different experiences, but the projection theory will allow them to relate and or learn from the story. Viewers with difficult backgrounds and strained relationships with their parents who are drawn to partners that mirror the same abusive traits at their parents may engage with the plot of our openings story as they can relate to the internal conflict about love and intimacy, different experiences will allow viewers to relate in different ways and for different reason  but ultimately the projection theory will make sure that the audience learns to not strive for this kind of relationship and empower those currently in them to leave, as they can see from an outsiders perspective the issues they may have been able to see themselves. Viewers in denial of their situation who are avoiding their toxic reality will be able to relate and make them want for change as they have just seen the outcome of staying.
